American Top 40 (#187)

Casey Kasem was disc jockey, actor, radio personality, and an American icon. Born in Michigan in 1932, he was drafted into the US Army and sent to Korea in 1952. In Korea, he was a DJ for the Armed Forces Network. After returning home, he continued to work in radio for the rest of his life. In 1970 he invented the American Top 40 show. Loosely based on the TV program Your Hit Parade, the show counted down the most popular music of the week from #40 to #1 based on the Billboard Hot 100 weekly chart. Kasem mixed in biographical information and trivia about the artists, as well as flashbacks and "Long-Distance Dedication" segments in between the songs. He served as the American Top 40 host until 1988, hosted a rival countdown called Casey’s Top 40, and then returned to the American Top 40 from 1998 until 2009. He also voiced “Shaggy” in the cartoon Scooby Doo. Unfortunately, Casey passed away in 2014 at the age of 82.

I know I listened to hundreds of these programs growing up. You can still listen to replays of the charts on the Sirius XM station “80s on 8.” While I was driving over Thanksgiving, I heard a replay of a 1980s American Top 40 that reminded me of Casey Kasem and his timeless show.

In honor of Casey Kasem and the Top 40 format, here is TFCG’s American Top 8 Blog Posts as if Casey Kasem did it:
